Lost in the Wilds of Greece was written by my long time friend Penny who went to Greece 40 years ago to teach English. She ended up running a riding stable near Thessaloniki, fell in love with the mountains, the countryside, the people and the extraordinary wildlife of Greece, and never came back.
This book is the story of her 1000 mile travels, with her trusty horse George, exploring from the south to the north and the west to the east of Greece taking in some of the wildest and most remote parts of the country. It a story of extraordinary horsemanship, of great personal courage and endurance and the freedom that only travelling alone in the wilderness can give.
It is also a environmental chronicle of a land that is fast changing as modernisation, mining and unchecked development ravage the countryside. And yet Penny still managed to find breathtaking beauty and talk to the people who preserve the magnificent landscape by using the farming methods the first shaped it.
